DESCRIPTION:Two Hour Thursday \nGeist Reservoir \nBiweekly Paddle \nLevel: Easy – Beginner or Intermediate or Advanced (multiple groups). \nMEET AT 6:00pm and we will LAUNCH at 6:30pm. \nKayak or SUP! Paddling isn’t just for the weekends! \nThis event is a part of our weekly paddling series. \nFrom Spring until Fall\, every other Thursday\, we meet for an evening of fun\, social and/or fitness paddling. On this Thursday\, we’ll be out on Geist Reservoir\, while on the alternating Tuesdays\, we’ll be out on Eagle Creek Reservoir. This event’s level is great for families\, beginners and the seasoned paddler. We usually have a large turnout and possibly split into smaller groups\, focusing on beginners\, fitness\, or those just out for a steady paddling pace. \nWe meet at Geist Park on Florida Road on Indy’s Northeast side\, every other Thursday evening at 6:00pm\, launch at 6:30pm and plan to be off the water by 8:30pm. We sometimes go out to dinner as a group afterward. There is no charge for parking or launching\, yet get there early as the parking lot does fill up quickly. \nSuggested items to bring: Kayak or SUP\, paddle\, PFD\, wide brimmed hat\, sun block\, hand sanitizer\, sunglasses\, large sponge\, bilge pump or container to bail out water\, water\, snacks\, weather radio\, towel\, change of clothes\, water shoes\, paddling gloves\, rain gear\, bug spray\, safety whistle\, drybags\, Ziplock bags\, camera\, binoculars\, rope\, headlamp or flashlight\, a sense of adventure\, and a good dose of humor. \nFor clothing try to use something other than cotton\, especially if the weather is cool. Polypropylene or polyester are good choices since neither holds water and they wick moisture away from you. \nRENTALS: For Kayak or SUP rental reservations with Freedom Kayak Adventures\, call[masked]. SUMMARY:IYAK -- White River - Paragon to Gosport
DESCRIPTION:Trip Difficulty: Easy. This will be suitable for beginners and up. Expect a lot of debris (strainers) in the river. Good boat handling skills may be necessary. Please consider this when you RSVP. \nThe trip will be 10 miles long and will probably last about 4 hours. This section of White River runs through some secluded areas. Expect to see a lot of wildlife. We will put in at the Paragon access point which is located on Paragon Road about 2 miles south of the town of Paragon. The Google Maps link for the drive to the put-in point from Indianapolis is: MAP LINK (https://goo.gl/maps/LcDLzZbtAMr). We will take out at the new Gosport access point. We will need to shuttle our vehicles. The shuttle procedure will be determined when we see how many people will be attending this event. If we leave the boats at the put-in point at 10:30am we should be able to drop off the vehicles at the take-out point and be back and on the water around 11:30am. \nBe sure to bring a lunch. We’ll stop along the river to eat. At the end of the day we’ll stop at a restaurant for dinner. \nCarpool/Caravan Site: For those wanting to carpool/ caravan to the put-in site we will meet at Focus Therapeutic Massage located at 8711 Southeastern Avenue\, Indianapolis\, 46239. DESCRIPTION:Pistol 100 (Basic Pistol) Overview\nPrerequisites: None \nEstimated Ammunition Required: About 300-400 rounds. \nPistol Requirements: You will need a safe pistol with at least five round capacity to fully participate in this course (loaner pistols are generally available; if you need a loaner pistol\, please indicate such when filling out your ticket information). Pistols should be of a modern\, drop safe design. \nOlder single action pistols manufactured before the 1980s and lacking a transfer bar safety are the most common type of pistol that lack drop safe design features\, as do some military surplus imports from Eastern bloc countries and Taurus PT-series pistols not fixed during an international safety recall in 2015. These pistols may discharge if dropped and pose a potential safety hazard to our volunteers and students\, and are not permitted. This course is appropriate for a wide breadth of student skill levels and lays a sound foundation for students to shoot groups under time pressure from a variety of practical stances and field positions. \nPlease review the Pistol 100 and Rifle 125 course descriptions for an overview of topics that will be covered over the weekend. \nPrerequisites: None \nEstimated Ammunition Required: About 250 rounds each of pistol and rifle ammunition (500 total). \nPistol Requirements: You will need a safe pistol with at least five round capacity to fully participate in this course. Pistols should be of a modern\, drop safe design. \nOlder single action pistols manufactured before the 1980s and lacking a transfer bar safety are the most common type of pistol that lack drop safe design features\, as do some military surplus imports from Eastern bloc countries and Taurus PT-series pistols not fixed during an international safety recall in 2015. These pistols may discharge if dropped and pose a potential safety hazard to our volunteers and students\, and are not permitted. If you have concerns about the safety features of your pistol you should have it inspected by an armorer or gunsmith before class. \nRifle Requirements: You will need a safe rifle chambered in your preferred caliber. Magazine-fed semi-automatic rifles generally work best for our classes\, but any other type of rifle (tube-fed semi-automatic\, lever-action\, bolt-action\, etc.) can be used as well. Bring whatever rifle you have and we will work with you. \nRequired Equipment: You should plan to bring the following equipment to the event: \n\nat least two magazines for your rifle\nat least two magazines for your pistol\na way to take notes\nhearing protection\neye protection\nplenty of your preferred method of hydration (both plain water and something to replace electrolytes you will lose via sweating is ideal)\nclothing appropriate for the weather (loose fitting clothing\, especially around the neck\, is discouraged as hot brass can lodge against the skin and cause a burn)\n\nIt is helpful that all ammunition be of the same type (i.e. same weight\, manufacturer\, etc) for this event. Our volunteers have identified several accessories that may be helpful at this type of event: \n\npistol accessories\nrifle accessories\n\nRifle shooting will primarily be at 25 yards. Pistol shooting will primarily be at 7 yards. Rimfire pistols and/or rifles will be perfectly suitable for this event. \nWe will not be drawing from the holster in this class and we will run a “cold range.” You will not need a holster to participate in the class activities. \nOptional Equipment: The following equipment is not required but may come in handy at the event: \n\nsling for your rifle (a US GI sling is preferred; loaner slings are typically available at the event)\nhat with a brim (to deflect flying hot brass)\nshooting mat\, carpet remnant or similar\nfolding chair\nlunch\nsnacks\nsunscreen and/or bug spray\n\nLoaner Firearms: loaner firearms suitable for use at this event are generally available but limited. DESCRIPTION:The Indiana Family Star Party and Prairie Grass Observatory Open House welcomes amateur astronomers of all ages to enjoy the dark skies at Prairie Grass Observatory. It is sponsored by Camp Cullom\, the Wabash Valley Astronomical Society\, the Indiana Astronomical Society\, the Muncie Astronomy Club and supported by the Astronomical League. \nMember activities include a Sky Trekker Observers program for kids and novice adults\, speakers who present on various astronomical topics\, a raffle\, solar observing\, nighttime observing\, camping\, and a nature walk. Everyone is welcome so RSVP and we’ll meet someplace on the grounds. \nMy plans are to arrive around 4-5pm then head straight to the solar telescope in hope of seeing solar flares and sunspots before the sun starts to set. The last time I did this I also saw the rare sight of a man-made satellite cross in front of the sun while I was observing. If a speaker is scheduled\, I’ll go to the nature center and listen to a talk. Sometime before sunset I’ll find a table to sit down and eat\, then take a hike on the easy trails in the woods and prairie until dusk. \nThe real activity starts after sunset around 9:40pm at civil twilight. The Prairie Grass Observatory has several large telescopes you can look through. Also\, amateur astronomers from all over the Midwest have their own telescopes set up and will\, upon request\, allow you to look at what they have focused on. The telescopes are various sizes with some the length of a car. Many are focused on different objects in the sky. The astronomers are eager to share their hobby with guests. \nParking: Do not park at the main entrance even if the gate is open. Instead\, go to the east entrance where you will pay admission and be directed where to park.\nBring: Telescope or binoculars\, camera/tripod\, flashlight w/red lens cover\, insect repellent\, reclining lawn chair\, cooler\, water/drinks\, snacks/food. \nNote… white light flashlights are not permitted near the viewing area as they will ruin other people’s night vision. Let me know and I can provide red plastic film to cover your flashlight lens. \nThis is a very dark campground and rural county providing for some of the best stargazing sky in Indiana. Plan on staying after midnight when you’ll have the opportunity to see the Milky Way light up the sky. Shooting stars are not unusual. DESCRIPTION:Trip Difficulty: Easy/Moderate. Depending on recent rainfall\, the river may be moving fast and good boat handling skills may be needed from time to time. Logjams and strainers may be expected. \nThis time we will paddle from Three Rivers SRA (Martinsville) to Paragon PAS. The put in site is just a few miles Northwest of Martinsville. It is a long carry (about 400 yards) from the parking to the river at the put-in site so please take that into consideration. \nBring something to eat and we will stop along the river for lunch. SUMMARY:HOAG -- Camping and Kayaking (Or Canoeing) at Chain O' Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Chain O’ Lakes to camp and kayak or canoe the kettle lakes inside the park. Boat rentals are available or you can bring your own. \nThis is a joint trip with Hoosier Happy Campers\, The HOAG\, and Indy On Fire. If you are a member of more than one of those groups\, you are welcome to RSVP at each one. This may assist you in finding someone to share your campsite and also ride sharing. Each campsite allows a maximum of 2 tents\, 6 people\, and 1 car. There is overflow parking available. \nWe plan to arrive Friday evening\, cook dinner\, and set up camp. We will get up Saturday morning\, cook breakfast\, and then get ready to go paddling. We will probably eat lunch during our paddle at one of the many shelters in the park. I recommend you bring a cooler or sack to pack your lunch in that is waterproof and can float. We will eat dinner at the campsite. As it gets closer to the event\, we may try and plan a community dinner where everyone chips in. Then we will go to the floating bonfire event hosted by the park. \nSunday morning we will pk up our campsites and then check out some of the attractions in the park like the school house before heading home. \nWhat you are responsible for: \nYour own transportation: \nYour own food for all three days. There will be very limited options to purchase food in the park. I also recommend snacks. \nYour own water and water container. There are water locations in the park. The park also has shower houses and restrooms\, including one near where we are staying. \nYour own campsite. We have reserved site 146 for both nights. I recommend you get site 144 or 148 if available. Otherwise\, check out the campground map to find one near us. Non-Electric sites are $19 per night plus fees and taxes. \nYour own tent\, sleeping bag\, and associated camping gear. \nSunscreen\, bug spray\, a hat\, a dry change of clothes. \nA good attitude. \nWe require everyone (regardless of how well you can swim) to wear a PFD while on the water. You will need the DNR sticker on your boat ($5 at any State Park location). Rentals will have the sticker already.

DESCRIPTION:Pistol 145 Overview\nPrerequisites: Suggested—Revere’s Riders Pistol 100 or similar. \nEstimated Ammunition Required: About 500 rounds/day. \nPistol Requirements: You will need a safe pistol (either semi-auto or revolver is fine) with at least five round capacity to fully participate in this course. Pistols should be of a modern\, drop safe design. \nOlder single action pistols manufactured before the 1980s and lacking a transfer bar safety are the most common type of pistol that lack drop safe design features\, as do some military surplus imports from Eastern bloc countries and Taurus PT-series pistols not fixed during an international safety recall in 2015. These pistols may discharge if dropped and pose a potential safety hazard to our volunteers and students\, and are not permitted. We’ll paddle around the lake for a few hours then head in. \nThere is always plenty of wildlife to see\, including beavers\, turtles and birds. \nWe will meet at the boat ramp near the boat rental concession area (turn left when you enter the park) at 7:30pm and we will be on the water at 8:00-8:15pm. SUMMARY:IHMG -- Hike @ Shades State Park
DESCRIPTION:[Please read the entire post before responding.] \nAfter the last couple of local hikes\, we’ll make a road trip west of Indy to this state park that’s well known for being one of the best and most rugged hiking spots in the state. The majority of the hike will be challenging\, and we’ll be encountering a mix of rocky gorges\, stream beds\, staircases\, and ladders. The plan for the day will be to cover around 7 miles in about 2.5 to 3 hours. We’ll be avoiding the worst heat of the day\, but be sure to bring along plenty to drink. \nAdmission to the park is $7 per vehicle. \nWe’ll be meeting at the parking lot in front of Dell Shelter. A map of the park is located here (http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2970.htm) at the Indiana DNR website. Just click on the “Maps” tab and then choose the Property Map. The Dell Shelter is indicated as “B” on the map. Make the first right you come to after passing through the gate house and then the next left. SUMMARY:IYAK — Blast on the Bridge Fireworks Show
DESCRIPTION:Trip Difficulty: Easy \nEverybody loves fireworks so we’re having a special night of Independence Day celebrations! Normally we’d have our Thursday evening paddle on Geist but we’re going to make this change. Arrive around 7:45pm and we’ll try to be on the water by 8pm. We will paddle past Olio Road and get as close to the Fall Creek Road bridge as we can safely to watch the fireworks show. We’ll then paddle back to the launch site. Nothing beats watching fireworks from the water since the reflections add another dimension to the effect \nPower boat traffic is expected to be EXTREMELY heavy so we will exercise extra caution. Everybody must have at least one bright white light and a whistle with them. We will stick close to shore at all times to stay out of the path of the other watercraft. \nPlease note: IYAK guidelines require all participants to wear a PFD while on the water. While it is best to ALWAYS wear your life vest\, at night it is much more important as it is easy to get disoriented in the darkness. Bring some sort of light. Preferably a glowstick to attach to your PFD and a headlamp or flashlight. \nSuggested items to bring: Hand sanitizer\, large sponge\, bilge pump or container to bail out water\, water\, snacks\, towel\, change of clothes\, water shoes\, paddling gloves\, bug spray\, safety whistle\, drybags\, Ziplock bags\, camera\, rope\, headlamp or flashlight\, a sense of adventure\, and a good dose of humor.\nFor clothing try to use something other than cotton\, especially if the weather is cool. SUMMARY:IHMG -- Hike @ Fort Harrison
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday we’ll be hiking this local state park on the northeast side. The trails here are mostly moderate\, but we’ll see a few hills and may see some muddy sections. \nThe hike itself will consist of two routes through the park. We’ll begin with the Fall Creek trail and then do part of the Camp Creek trail\, which will take us back to where we started. At that point anyone who’s ready to call it a day can do so. We’ll then make our way across to park to hike the Lawrence Creek trail\, a loop that’s 3.7 miles\, and return to where we began. We’ll be covering around 7 miles altogether. \nAdmission is $7. \nWe’ll meet at the parking lot next to Delaware Lake. After passing by the gatehouse\, you’ll take the first right you come to and this road will take you back to the parking lot. A map of the park is located here (http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/files/ftharrison_trail.pdf). Just look for the group of us in the parking lot. \nAfter the hike\, for those interested\, we’ll be grabbing some lunch at the Panera on 56th Street (9145 E. 56th Street) near the park. \nCar Pool Info: Our car pool will be meeting along the west side of Bishop Chatard High School\, which is on the corner of Kessler Boulevard and Crittenden Avenue\, at 5885 Crittenden Avenue. The parking along the street is free on Saturdays. DESCRIPTION:Late notice I know but this weekend actually looks like a NO RAIN WEEKEND! I’ll accept the 20% chance of isolated\, late afternoon showers! Temps will be in the upper 80’s too! Perfect time to be on the river! \nThe fastest flowing river in Indiana\, the WHITEWATER RIVER is considered a Class 1 stream and great for paddlers of all skill levels! One of my favorite rivers to paddle. Morgan Adventures will be our host. I personally like having a shuttle to carry me to & from the outfitters knowing my car is parked in a safe location.\nThis will be a 12 mile paddle lasting 5 – 7 hours. So bring a lunch & plenty of water as it’s looking to be a hot\, sunny day. DESCRIPTION:Two Hour Tuesday \nEagle Creek Reservoir \nBiweekly Paddle \nLevel: Easy – Beginner or Intermediate or Advanced (multiple groups). \nKayak or SUP! Paddling isn’t just for the weekends! \nThis event is a part of our weekly paddling series. \nFrom Spring thru Fall\, every other Tuesday\, we meet for an evening of fun\, social and/or fitness paddling. On this Tuesday\, we’ll be out on Eagle Creek Reservoir\, while on the alternating Thursdays\, we’ll be out on Geist Reservoir. \nThis event’s levels are great for families\, beginners and the seasoned paddler. We usually have a large turnout and possibly split into smaller groups\, focusing on beginners\, fitness\, or those just out for a steady paddling pace. \nWe will be meeting at the Dandy Trail boat ramp\, located about a block north of Rick’s Cafe Boatyard\, every other Tuesday evening at 6:00pm\, launch at 6:30pm and plan to be off the water by 8:30pm. We usually go out to dinner as a group afterward. \nThe boat ramp entrance fee is $5\, cash only. You can optionally purchase yearly passes. \nIf you don’t need to drop off a boat at the ramp there is a free parking lot between Rick’s and the boat ramp. SUMMARY:RR -- LADIES ONLY Pistol 100 (Basic Pistol) – One Day (Richmond\, IN)
DESCRIPTION:This will be a special LADIES ONLY event—thanks for joining us! \nPistol 100 (Basic Pistol) Overview\nPrerequisites: None \nEstimated Ammunition Required: About 300-400 rounds. \nPistol Requirements: You will need a safe pistol with at least five round capacity to fully participate in this course (loaner pistols are generally available; if you need a loaner pistol\, please indicate such when filling out your ticket information). Pistols should be of a modern\, drop safe design. \nOlder single action pistols manufactured before the 1980s and lacking a transfer bar safety are the most common type of pistol that lack drop safe design features\, as do some military surplus imports from Eastern bloc countries and Taurus PT-series pistols not fixed during an international safety recall in 2015. These pistols may discharge if dropped and pose a potential safety hazard to our volunteers and students\, and are not permitted. If you have concerns about the safety features of your pistol you should have it inspected by an armorer or gunsmith before class. \nRequired Equipment: You should plan to bring the following equipment to the event: \n\nat least two magazines for your pistol\na way to take notes\nhearing protection\neye protection\nplenty of your preferred method of hydration (both plain water and something to replace electrolytes you will lose via sweating is ideal)\nclothing appropriate for the weather (loose fitting clothing\, especially around the neck\, is discouraged as hot brass can lodge against the skin and cause a burn)\n\nWe will not be drawing from the holster in this class and we will run a “cold range.” You will not need a holster to participate in the class activities. \nOptional Equipment: The following equipment is not required but may come in handy at the event: \n\nhat with a brim (to deflect flying hot brass)\nfolding chair\nlunch\nsnacks\nsunscreen and/or bug spray\n\nOverview: This course\, based on traditional American service pistol fundamentals teaches “Hits Count!” This course lays a sound foundation for students to shoot groups under time pressure from a practical stance. Pistol 100 includes classroom and range time learning to shoot handguns. Paul Revere did not ride alone – many individuals played crucial roles in the events of April 19th\, 1775. \nThis history presentation begins with alarm riders warning “the Regulars are out!” You’ll hear about the dramatic stand on Lexington Green and the “shots heard ’round the world” at Concord’s North Bridge. The tale concludes with harrowing life-or-death choices made along the 17 mile “battle road.” \nThis exciting tale will be woven throughout the day’s marksmanship events. \nAdditional Event Information\nYour range fee is included in the ticket price. \nWin a Copy of “Women Heroes of the American Revolution”\n \nEvery schoolchild knows about Paul Revere’s 20-mile ride to warn that the “Regulars are out!” Far fewer know that 16-year-old Sybil Ludington rode twice as far on her horse Star in order to help her father\, Colonel Ludington\, muster his scattered troops to fight a marauding enemy.
