Beyond that we’ll actually be taking in the “Triple Crown” that includes McAfee Knob\, Tinker Cliff and Dragon’s Tooth in this AT trip to Central Virginia\nWe will start on Friday afternoon with a stay along the way in Beckley WV. A short ways along from there\, our first hike will be the Dragon’s Tooth\, a unique geologic feature that consists of Tuscarora quartzite spires which outcrop on the top of Cove Mountain. Then we’ll stay in Daleville VA before we start a 21 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail. Along the way we will view the Tinker Cliff\, stay in two AT shelters and have plenty of time to take in the scenery get all our pictures of the Blue Ridge Mountains when we arrive at the McAfee Knob. The trip is planned from Friday to Tuesday with hopes of avoiding the hiker crowds in the shelters over the week-end. Surely the fall colors will also be part of our trail delight.\nThe trip price includes two nights’ hotel lodging with breakfasts\, two trail breakfasts\, two trail dinners\, shuttles\, and transportation in the club van. In preparation for the trip a couple of day hikes and a possible overnight hike will be arranged.

On this trip we’ll learn the importance and value of carrying “THE ESSENTIALS” in your day pack.   The scenario – we’re out day hiking and something goes wrong.  Now we are forced to spend the night in the woods with only the contents of our day packs to SURVIVE. \n  This will be an intermediate trip (not for beginners) and we’ll work together to make a shelter\, find water\, build a fire and improvise with basic tools you will have in your day pack.  A list of essentials will be provided by the leaders and it will compare very closely with the classic and modern lists that outdoor experts and survivalists use.   Tents and sleeping bags are out so you’ll be improvising to make a shelter and stay warm during the night.  You’ll also be working as a team.  Not only will it be fun but rewarding as a memorable learning experience.  We are asking that everyone who applies should have spent a minimum of 3 nights in previous backcountry situations. \n  This will be a reprise of a similar CIWC event from 2015.  The participants in that event were all newer members in the club at the time with less than 2 years of club experience.  Six of that group have gone on to become trip leaders and 3 became members of the board. So\, they were successful and what a confidence builder! \n  The exact destination will be withheld until the end but you’ll be guided to meet at a rendezvous point outside of the wilderness.  The event will last just a bit over 24 hours from Saturday morning to Sunday morning.  The cost (estimated at $30) will cover “one last meal” (at lunch) and some surprises.  You’ll be expected to submit a medical form and sign a waiver and release.\n  Additional information including a list of what to bring will be supplied after you sign up. We will spend a full day there on Monday to see some beautiful sights of the “Porkies”\, including the Lake of the Clouds Scenic Area\, the Escarpment Trail and the Overlook Trail. On Tuesday\, we will drive 70 miles to Sylvania Wilderness in Ottawa National Forest near Watersmeet\, MI\, stopping on the way at Sylvania Outfitters to pick up our canoe paddles and PFDs. Our canoes will be shuttled for us to the Clark Lake landing. We will camp four nights in a primitive wilderness campsite on Clark Lake about a one hour paddle (and no portaging) from our entry point\, and take some day paddles or hikes from our base camp there. Sylvania Wilderness is a beautiful and pristine area of 18\,000 acres\, with 34 lakes\, and 25 miles of hiking trails and portages. The portages are well-maintained and easy trails of short to moderate length. One of the days while we are camping in Sylvania\, we will take a day trip in the van to the resort town of Eagle River\, WI\, about 35 miles away. We will leave our campsite on Clark Lake early on Saturday morning\, paddle back to the landing\, and hit the road after a much-needed hot shower\, arriving home late Saturday evening.\nThe trip fee will include all meals and snacks on Monday through Friday\, except for the day we travel to Eagle River\, and meals on the drive up and drive home on Sunday and Saturday. We will provide the stoves\, fuel\, cook gear\, eating and drinking cups\, plates\, and eating utensils. For suppers\, we will have home-made dehydrated meals or Mountain House entrees\, and Ramen noodles\, along with some puddings or other desserts. We may be able to have some fried fish to supplement our regular menu\, if we have fishermen\, and they catch fish they can keep. For lunches\, we will have peanut butter\, jelly\, tuna in foil packs\, Miracle Whip or mayonnaise on tortillas\, flatbread or sandwich thins. There will also be beef jerky\, summer sausage\, dried apples\, and granola bars for snacks. For breakfasts\, we will have bacon\, eggs\, oatmeal\, granola\, and pancakes\, but probably not all for the same breakfast! We will have coffee singles\, tea bags\, Crystal Lite drink mix packets\, and hot cocoa for drinks. No alcoholic beverages will be permitted. We will have filtered lake water to drink at all times as well. If you have any special dietary needs or complaints with the above fare\, let me know. There will be weight and space restrictions on what you can bring. The club leaders will bring all the food and gear needed for the trip. You will just need an inflatable sleeping pad\, sleeping bag\, tent\, and clothes. No bulky foam pads or metal chairs will be allowed\, and cans and bottles are prohibited pursuant to National Forest regulations.

This is an opportunity to pay back one of our local partners and one of Indianapolis’s premier paddling resources by cleaning up the shores of Eagle Creek reservoir.\n* When: Saturday\, September 30th\, 10 a.m (Ready to Launch) until 1:00 pm \n* Where: Eagle Creek Park\, Canoe and Kayak put-in at the southwest end of the Discovery Center Parking Lot (next to Go Ape) \n* What to Bring: Snacks\, water\, gloves\, hat\, good water shoes\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, and your canoe or kayak. Trash bags and some trash grabber thingies will be provided. You might bring a knife for cutting fishing line. \n* Park Entry: This event has been added to the park calendar. When entering the park\, please tell the person at the entrance that you are a HCKC member here for the shoreline clean up. \nWe’ll plan to work until early afternoon or until we run out of trash to pick up. Plan to stay for all or part of the clean-up\, and we often go out of lunch afterwards.\nFor all the club members who have enjoyed getting into the park using the HCKC park pass on Tuesdays\, this clean-up is part of the price for that privilege. The club is committed to work 100 volunteer hours for the park in 2017. The HCKC gets volunteer hours for safety boating during the park’s popular moonlight and sunset paddles run by the Eagle Creek Outfitters\, and for clean-ups during the year. We’d like to thank those who have safety boated or already helped with park clean-ups.\nSide note: On a warm July day\, two HCKC members got to do some impromptu safety boating when they noticed two swimmers struggling to make progress towards shore while towing a swamped tandem kayak. Fortunately\, the swimmers were not panicked\, had retained both paddles\, ziplock bag with electronics\, and were wearing life jackets. Minutes later\, tandem drained and floating\, bilge pump (point of discussion) used to get even more water out\, and two paddlers back in the boat\, and once again on their way!\nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Event Overview\nPrerequisites\nAt this event you may fire from either the “low ready” or draw from a holster. Less experienced shooters are encouraged to fire from the “low ready” while shooters who have had previous training in correctly drawing from a holster may do so if they wish. Drawing from a holster (or even having a holster for your handgun) is not a requirement to participate in this event. However\, we expect all participants to abide by the following suggested prerequisites: \n\n\n\nFiring from “low ready”: familiarity with range safety rules and ability to shoot safely (a previous NRA Basic Pistol\, Revere’s Riders Pistol 100 course or similar training from another organization is sufficient).\nDrawing from a holster: drawing from a holster will be allowed at this event. However\, there will be some limitations on the holster:\n\nthe holster must fit your handgun—this means that your handgun should correctly fit in the holster and that the trigger is completely covered when your handgun is holstered.\nno “appendix”\, “small of the back”\, “cross draw” or “shoulder” holsters will be allowed—there are 10 firing positions at the range we will be using and it is nearly impossible to use these types of holsters without “flagging” someone else either on or behind the firing line. The holster you use for the event should position your handgun in the 3 to 4 o’clock position on the strong side of your belt.\nuse an appropriate belt to support your holster and handgun—you should have a belt that is capable of supporting the weight of your holster and firearm. Most general purpose belts aren’t up to this; your waist will thank you for using a belt designed to support your holster and handgun.\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditionally\, you should have previous experience in drawing from a holster if you plan to do so at this event. We will not be teaching you how to correctly draw from a holster; if your draw technique is deemed to be unsafe by the event RSOs\, you will be asked to discontinue drawing from a holster and to fire from the low ready instead. \nRequired Equipment\nThe following equipment will be required: \n\n\n\na safe handgun (centerfire is preferred\, but rimfire will also work)\na minimum of 400 rounds of ammunition in the correct caliber for your handgun (bring more ammunition if you have it; the last thing you want is to run out before the day is over).\neye protection\near protection\nsufficient magazines or “moon clips” for your handgun (4 is a good minimum for this event; if you have a low-capacity handgun\, bring more)\n\n\n\nOptional Equipment\nOptional equipment that will likely increase your enjoyment of this event includes: \n\n\n\nmagazine loading tool (Maglula or similar)—you will be loading a LOT of magazines during this event and having a magazine loading tool will lessen the strain on your thumb.\na folding chair and something to provide shade from the sun (the range is out in the open with limited shelter)\nsunscreen and/or bug spray\na hat with a brim to protect from the sun and hot brass\nplenty of your preferred method of hydration. Both plain water and something to replace the electrolytes you will lose via sweating is ideal.\nsnacks\n\n\n\nMinimal Instruction\nThis will not be an instructional event but rather a special opportunity to shoot on the same range used by Navy Seals\, Special Forces\, Army Rangers\, etc. We will have a safety briefing before any live fire occurs to ensure everyone is aware of the safety rules in place for the event. Once the safety briefing is complete\, there will be minimal breaks in order to maximize rounds down range. \nEvent Details\nThe range consists of electronically controlled “pop-up” targets that can be programmed to raise/lower in a myriad of sequences and with varying degrees of difficulty for the shooter. This range is normally not accessible to the general public; this is a very unique opportunity to experience the same training environment as some of our nation’s most elite soldiers. \nAs such\, you should be comfortable with your handgun in order to attend this event; this will be an opportunity to apply skills that you have learned in previous handgun training courses. Shooting will be from a fixed position (i.e.\, no movement while on the firing line). Drawing from a holster will be allowed but you should obviously be proficient and comfortable with doing so; drawing from a holster will not be a required part of this event (i.e.\, you may complete each course of fire starting from the “low ready” position). Movement will be allowed it will be one step to the right or the left. This is an opportunity to practice your defensive skills. \nWhile there will be no formal instruction at this event\, experienced firearms instructors will be present at the event and will provide limited instruction as needed. However\, this is not a training event and participants should not expect to receive extensive instruction. \nShooters will be assigned two per lane on the firing line (we are happy to pair you up with a friend if you desire). This will allow one shooter to be on the firing line while the other is reloading magazines as needed. \nThe course of fire for one session will generally consist of around 5 programmed sequences of the “pop-up” targets. Each sequence will in turn consist of one or multiple targets being presented for a given duration; targets are knocked down by a hit in the “kill” zone (center of mass or head area). Targets remain standing if only struck in the “hit” zone (everything not in the “kill” zone) and disappear at the end of the programmed duration. Each sequence will consist of multiple target presentations. Shooters will rotate at the end of each session. \nEven though we are on a military range\, participants should feel free to “sit out” a rotation if they wish. \nThere will be a morning and\, if demand is sufficient\, an afternoon session. We are selling the morning session first; if and when that session fills\, we will open ticket sales for the afternoon session. On Sunday we will take a short morning hike before leaving to return to Indy sometime in that evening.\nThe trails in the Smokys are well marked and easy to follow but can be very strenuous in the mountain areas. We should be able to see waterfalls\, mountain streams\, old growth trees\, old settler’s homes\, numerous wildflowers\, bears\, and fantastic scenery from the mountain clearings.\nThe specific trails will be picked out by the trip leader in the spring of 2017. Cost for the trip is $230 per person. This will include van transportation to and from the park as well as daily drop offs and pickups\, 6 breakfasts\, 6 dinners and campsite fees. This trip is not for beginning hikers as the hikes will be several hours long and can be strenuous as noted above. You will be responsible for providing sleeping bags\, tent and your own snacks and lunches while on the trails. We will be running our 25 yard Rifle Qualifier throughout the day without the usual instruction and history that is common to our other events. Except for a quick rifle zeroing target in the morning\, this event will be back-to-back 25 yard Rifle Qualifiers. \nThis is your opportunity to work on earning a rifle patch or improve upon the patch you earned at a previous Rifle 125 event. The club van will be used to transfer bikes\, gear and people to Richmond\, IN. We will start riding the Cardinal Greenway trail at Richmond and end up at the Prairie Creek Reservoir campground Saturday afternoon. Saturday’s distance is about 34 miles. Riders will need to bring snacks / lunch to eat along the trail. Saturday’s dinner will be provided. We may visit the National Model Aviation Museum in Muncie if time allows.\nAfter a a hearty breakfast Sunday morning we will ride 30 miles to Upland\, IN home of Taylor University and the world famous Ivanhoes ice cream shop. Riders will need to bring a snack to eat during the ride. After enjoying ice cream we will return to Indianapolis Sunday afternoon.\nThis trip will include using the club van for transportation\, one supper\, one breakfast and camping fees. Camping gear and supplies will be transported by the van. Riders will need to have a bicycle in good working condition\, provide their own food while riding and be able to travel at 12 mph for 35 miles. There will be rest breaks. The first bridge walk was held during the Bridge’s Dedication Ceremony in June of 1958 and only 68 people walked across the Mackinac Bridge that year. The walk has been held on Labor Day every year since 1959. In recent years\, this annual event draws in nearly 100\,000 people. It’ll be 60th Annual Walk this year on September 4\, 2017. Everyone gets a certificate of completion after the 5 mile walk.\nWe will drive early Saturday morning to arrive at Mackinaw City\, MI on the south side of the bridge for dinner and enjoy the beautiful sunset overlooking the bridge. Hotel stay will be near the north side of the bridge in St. Ignace\, MI. Breakfast is included with the hotel booking. There are many tours available to Mackinac Island\, which is only accessible by ferryboats. Sunday activities could include a tour in the Mackinac Island. Bridge walk will be early Monday morning. After the bridge walk\, we will stroll through the town for a short time and drive back.\nTransport in the club van and two nights’ hotel bookings are included in the trip cost. All other expenses including lunch and dinner or any tours will be individual responsibility. Starline ferry offers Mackinac Island Package that includes: Round Trip Ferry Ticket\, 1 1/2 hour Narrated Carriage Tour\, and Entrance into Historic Fort Mackinac. This tour to the island is optional. If you need to ride back to the north side after the bridge walk\, you’ll need to buy the shuttle bus ticket for $5 (cash only).

In the other\, we will cover ACA Intermediate (Level 2 and 3) Instruction that we have offered only once per year in the past.\n* · Introduction to Paddling – \nTarget Paddlers: HCKC members who have never taken a class or who feel unsure of their strokes in their recreational\, touring\, or sea kayak.\nClass Content: Here’s a way to jumpstart your paddling! As a new kayaker\, you may know how to move your boat around in calm water. We will work with you to make your paddling easier and more efficient—to give you more control over your boat. We will work on your basic knowledge\, strokes\, and other paddling skills that you may need to safely enjoy the sport. This course is based on the American Canoe Association “Introduction to Kayaking” course. This is also a great opportunity to ask any question that you might have about paddling or the Hoosier Canoe and Kayak Club.\nYour instructor will first talk with you about the basics and then quickly get on the water to teach you how to move your boat forward\, backwards\, and sideways as well as how to turn and stop. .\n* · Intermediate Kayak Control (Edging/Turning and Stroke Refinement) \nTarget Paddlers: HCKC members who have taken an introductory class at least one year ago and who are comfortable with their forward-turning strokes as well as with their draw and rudder maneuvers. This class targets recreational\, touring\, and sea kayaks.\nClass Content: Boat control and turning are essential for Intermediate paddlers whether you are paddling on creeks\, rivers\, lakes\, or oceans. You need to make your boat do what you want it to do. In this class\, we will spend the entire class helping you to turn your boat faster\, easier\, and with more control. The main topics that we cover are listed below:\n* • Edging your boat and using fore/aft lean to turn your boat or to make it go straight \n* • Bow and stern rudders \n* • Side draws – Maneuvers that move your boat sideway without changing the angle of your boat \n* • Maneuvers to paddle tighter turns with control \nThis section will start with a short discussion of boat dynamics and quickly get on the water to start learning to play with your boat.\nMeeting Place: To be Announced – The instructors will send out an e-mail to participants about one week before the class. DESCRIPTION:https://hoosiercanoeandkayakclub.wildapricot.org/event-2465105 \nGreen River Overnight and Solar Eclipse Paddle\, Mammoth Cave National Park\, KY; August 18-21\nNote: the removal of the dam downstream of Mammoth Cave has changed the river a bit\, so some adjustments to the itinerary may be necessary\, including not being able to camp on the river. National Park rangers are now enforcing a mandatory wear your PFD rule. So\, stay flexible and enjoy the trip. :) \nIf you have ever wanted to try to camp out of your boat\, this trip is for you! One of my favorite places to paddle\, the Green River runs right through Mammoth Cave National Park and is a great outdoor resource available to all for hiking\, fishing\, camping\, and especially kayaking or canoeing. Wildlife abounds in the park\, and it is not uncommon to see deer\, wild turkey\, bald eagles\, raccoons\, beaver\, or hear the howls of a coyote pack in the distance. Since this is a National Park\, fishing is permitted without a license so feel free to bring your pole! If you don’t have a pole\, let me know and I may have an extra one for you to borrow.\nFriday Aug.18\nI plan on heading down early Friday and plan on camping at the Mammoth Cave National Park campground. The campgrounds are nice and clean; have flushing toilets and pay showers. Please let me know if you would be interested in camping as well\, as we can share sites\, etc. Cost is $20 per night and up to 8 persons per site. I plan on reserving sites for 3 nights in case of inclement weather or river conditions.\nCampground details: http://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/macacampground.htm\nSaturday Aug.19\nMeeting Point: Mammoth Cave Campground Store\nFor those who are not camping Friday night\, we will meet at the campground store. There is little to no cell phone service in MCNP\, so please plan on meeting Saturday at 9:30 am EST (8:30 CST). We will promptly leave at 9:45 am EST to the put-in.\nMammoth Cave National Park map: http://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfile&PageID=69446\nPut In: Dennison’s Ferry\nWe will caravan to the put-in\, unload and run our shuttle. Shuttles will have to be figured out at the put-in based on vehicles\, number of people\, and who is going where. Shuttle time will be a little over an hour total.\nSome people don’t like camping and would rather explore on their own and sleep in a bed\, I get that. So\, for those of you who opt to sleep off the water you can take out at the Green River Ferry. It will be a nice 8 mile paddle for you on Saturday. For those of us sleeping river side\, we will continue to paddle down to our target camping spot of Sand Cave Island; located close to Turn Hole Bend. Camp spots are first come\, first serve\, so I would like to get to our island in the early evening so we can set up\, gather wood\, and relax for the night. Campers will paddle a total of approx. 12 miles Saturday. I will be bringing a cooking grate and a percolating coffee maker to share; you will need to bring what you would like to cook\, eat\, mix\, etc.\nFor those camping\, I will get our free camping permits Friday. I will need your vehicle’s Make\, Model\, and plate number\, along with emergency contact info. Your vehicle must have this permit displayed if you leave it overnight in the park.\nSuggested things to bring for camping:\nAlthough downed wood can be used for firewood\, it is always appreciated if you bring along some charcoal in a small ziplock baggie. Other suggested items include: flash light\, bug spray\, sunscreen\, plenty of water\, paper plates\, paper cups\, personal toiletries\, tent\, a couple of trash bags\, sleeping bag\, sleeping pad (we usually camp on a gravel bar)\, change of clothes\, a positive attitude\, sense of humor and don’t forget to pack food for Sunday. One tip I like to adhere to is to freeze my water bottles instead of bringing ice. They stay frozen longer and you will always have ice cold water to drink.\nHere are some other tips:\nhttp://www.paddling.net/guidelines/showArticle.html?317\nSunday\nIf you opted to not camp and still want to paddle on Sunday\, you can meet us campers on the river. The non-campers will need to run their own shuttle on Sunday. It sounds complicated\, but it worked out pretty well last time. J\nCampers will have an approx. 8 mile paddle on Sunday\, with non-campers paddling 12 miles. We will spend 4 days and 3 nights backpacking between Grand Marais and Munising\, passing lighthouses\, giant sand dunes and sandstone cliffs. After driving to Michigan we will stay at the Sunset Inn then again after we complete the trail. On day 6 we will join Pictured Rocks Cruises on a 2+ hour water excursion and view the brilliantly colored cliffs\, sea caves\, and pristine beaches.\nAfter our cruise we will drive to and camp for 2 nights at Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Here we will hike approximately 8 miles and explore one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi.\nAll activities and motel accommodations are included in the cost of the trip. In addition 7 breakfasts and 5 dinners are also included. Participants will be responsible for bringing their own lunches\, snacks\, and travel meals. Details will be provided as we get closer to our travel date.\nPictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located on the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. In August\, expect average an average high temperature of 74 degrees and a low temperature of 56 degrees.\nThis is a Level 3 activity due to lack of cell phone coverage. The terrain is relatively flat\, experienced backpackers should have no problem with elevation on this trip. Longest daily hike distance is 12 miles and backpackers should have the capability to keep with the group at a moderate pace of 2 to 2.5mph.

One quarry is dedicated to swimming and also includes: \n\n\n\nfour diving platforms (highest is 10 meters)\nfloating rafts for relaxing\nrope swing\ntwo zip lines\nscuba diving (you must have your own equipment and be certified)\n\n\n\nThe other two quarries are reserved for fishing\, one of which is stocked with channel catfish. DESCRIPTION:We take boys and help them become young men. We spend a Sunday through Friday camping. Each boy either brings a mentor or we work to provide one. This year we are at Obannon Woods State Park. We will be swimming\, shooting\, hiking\, and mountain biking. There will be devotionals that the kids will lead. The boys do the cooking. They will be divided into teams and we will have several team building exercises. We use the book\, “Raising a Modern Day Knight” as a template. We have been doing this for 12 years and it is a highlight of the year for the boys and their mentors.
