Trip Difficulty: Moderate. Can be some strainers and other hazards on the creek. If the water is flowing swiftly good boat handling skills may be required so this is not recommended for anybody with zero experience. On our first trip down this creek nearly half of the paddlers ended up in the water at one time or another.
Hopefully the air will be warm and the water running. What a great combination for a fun paddle down Deer Creek. Located about 20 miles northeast of Lafayette, this is a very scenic and interesting stream. The creek has plenty of curves and ripples to make it a bit more challenging than some, with some boulders and trees thrown in to make it even more interesting.
Since it is a stream we will have to arrange to have vehicles at the takeout point to take us back to the starting point. Try to get there on early so we can unload our boats & gear and then shuttle as many vehicles to the take out as possible. We should be able to be on the water by noon, hopefully sooner. Bring some food and we’ll have lunch along the river. This trip is about 11-12 miles long and should last 4-5 hours. We will put-in at the SR 75 bridge just south of Camden and take-out at the city park in Delphi. The Googlemaps url for the route to the put-in site is: http://goo.gl/maps/QS3fY
Post-paddling activities: For anybody interested we will stop at a restaurant for dinner on the way back.
Suggested items to bring: Wide brimmed hat, sun block, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, large sponge, bilge pump or container to bail out water, water, snacks, weather radio, towel, change of clothes, water shoes, paddling gloves, rain gear, bug spray, safety whistle, drybags, Ziplock bags, camera, binoculars, rope, headlamp or flashlight, a sense of adventure, and a good dose of humor.
For clothing try to use something other than cotton, especially if the weather is cool. Polypropylene or polyester are good choices since neither holds water and they wick moisture away from you.
*Remember, the new IYAK policy is all participants MUST wear a PFD while on the water.
