IYAK — Paddlers Paradise Weekend at Summit Lake State Park

August 17, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am UTC-4

Daytime & Evening Paddles

Summit Lake State Park

Trip Difficulty: Easy (Beginner to Advanced Skills)

Trip Leader: Laurie Shoemaker (463)[masked] (Text Only)

DNR and Summit lake has asked IYAK for help this year with their annual Paddlers Paradise. For the third year running Laurie Shoemaker and Eddie Scales will be running the events and will be IYAK’s representatives. We hope to see lots of you out on the lake and would love to see some of you help out at the events listed below.

Saturday 9:30 to 11:30am – Learn to paddle: This event will be held by the boat rental and IYAK will supervise those (young or young at heart) who would like to try out our sport in the shallows. We may just paddle around or if the numbers are right we can even lead some kayak games. Open to all (under 18 must have guardian present).

8:00 to 9:00pm- Sunset Paddle. This event will start by the boat rentals and is scheduled to be a short, hour long paddle to share the sunset. If there are clear skies and lots of starlight we IYAKer’s may wish to continue after the end of the DNR paddle. Just remember to have your white light with you!

Sunday 6:30 to 7:30am – Sunrise Paddle. Meeting at the boat rentals, this is our last DNR event and will be scheduled to last one hour. The hope is to duck into some inlets and find some nocturnal animals who haven’t gone to their beds! Join us and we may extend the paddle well into the day!

IYAK will go paddling at other times as well. That will be determined later. Please pay attention to any updates.

For park information go to: Summit Lake State Park (http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2967.htm). Visit our IYAK File Section (http://www.meetup.com/IYAK-Indiana-Kayakers/files/) to download a park brochure. There is a $7 park admission fee (or $50 annual state pass). They have a great camping facility, if anyone wants to explore the option to make it an overnight trip.

Suggested items to bring: Wide brimmed hat, sun block, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, large sponge, bilge pump or container to bail out water, water, snacks, towel, change of clothes, water shoes, paddling gloves, rain gear, bug spray, safety whistle, camera, flashlight/headlamp, a sense of adventure, and a good dose of humor. For clothing try to use something other than cotton, especially if the weather is cool. Polypropylene or polyester are good choices since neither holds water and they wick moisture away from you.

IYAK policy is for all paddlers to wear a PFD while on the water.

* This event is on IN-DNR property, so regulations require your boat to have a 2019 Non-Motorized Boat Permit decal. They are available at the park entrance or you can purchase one online or at the downtown Indy office for $5.

Event hosts reserve the right to cancel due to inclement weather. Any cancellation or adjustment to the schedule will be posted in this event’s message thread.

Please answer ALL of the questions when you RSVP.
