Demo Day/Beginners Paddle Summit Lake State Park Trip Difficulty: Easy (Beginner to Advanced Skills)
We’re heading back to an IYAK favorite, Summit Lake State Park, an hour east of Indy. A new paddling season has started and we have a lot of beginner paddlers.
1. We will spend a little time going over some paddling basics and have a short practice time after that.
2. Following the instruction period we will have a demo time where we get to try out each others’ boats. If you’re in the market for a kayak this is a great way to see what model of boat fits you.
3. Then we’ll paddle around the lake for an hour or so before we head back.
Besides the instruction and boat demoing there is always plenty of wildlife to see, including beavers, turtles and birds. We will meet at the northern boat ramp (turn right when you enter the park).
For park information go to: Summit Lake SP (http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2967.htm).
FEES: There is a $7 park admission fee (or annual state pass).
You will need the DNR Non-Motorized Boat Permit sticker on your boat. If you don’t already have one they can be purchased at the gatehouse when you enter the park.
Rentals: For Kayak rental reservations with Freedom Kayak Adventures, call[masked]. Single seat kayaks are $50 and tandem boats are $60 for this event. The price includes boat, PFD, paddle and delivery to the launch site.
Suggested items to bring: Wide brimmed hat, sun block, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, large sponge, bilge pump or container to bail out water, water, snacks, towel, change of clothes, water shoes, paddling gloves, rain gear, bug spray, safety whistle, camera, flashlight/headlamp, a sense of adventure, and a good dose of humor. For clothing try to use something other than cotton, especially if the weather is cool. Polypropylene or polyester are good choices since neither holds water and they wick moisture away from you.
* IYAK rules require you to wear a PFD while on the water.
Event hosts reserve the right to cancel due to inclement weather. Any cancellation or adjustment to the schedule will be posted in this event’s message thread.
Please answer ALL of the questions when you RSVP.
